Interactive Oil Skimming Selection Tool
Source:     Editor:     Date: 2014-1-10

Belt skimmers are the most economical method for separating oil and water. However, not all applications are alike, so choosing the right oil skimmer and belt material is essential in order for successful oil removal. Although designs vary, all oil skimmers rely on specific gravity, surface tension and a moving medium to remove floating oil from a fluid's surface. Oil skimmers are simple, dependable and effective tools for removing oil, grease and other hydrocarbons from water and coolants. Often, an oil skimmer by itself can achieve the desired level of water purity. In more demanding situations, oil skimming is a cost-effective means of removing most of the oilbefore using more complicated and costly treatments such as coalescers, membrane filters, andchemical processes.

Selecting the proper skimmer and belt material depends on a variety of factors. Grease typically requires that the unit come equipped with a heater to handle the higher viscosity material. Freezing temperatures also require some sort of heat mechanism as well. The shape or capacity of a tank can affect skimmer selection. While oil skimmers don't cause emulsions, the presence of emulsions in the tank can also be a factor when selecting belt materials.

The oil skimmer selection guide is available on Abanaki’s website.
