Oil and Gas Leak on Statfjord A
Source:     Editor:     Date: 2014-1-10

On Saturday 28 December 2013, an oil and gas leak was reported on the Statfjord A platform in the North Sea. Statfjord A was depressurised and shut down, according to operator Statoil, Norway. The leakage has since been stopped, and the site of the leak has been found and isolated.

There were 168 personnel on board the installation. No one was injured during the incident. The personnel were mustered and approximately half of them were moved to nearby installations since it was uncertain how long the incident would last.

Production from Statfjord A was resumed on 29 December.

During the incident, the volume of the leak was not known. In continuous dialogue with the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway, the volumes and the chain of events have been accounted for. Statoil has initiated an in-depth study, in which the triggering and underlying causes and potential of the incident, among other factors, will be evaluated.

The leak consisted of around one cubic metre of stabilised crude. The oil was collected by the drain system and no oil was spilled into the sea. The gas detection was released by gas evaporating from the oil.
