Gulf of Mexico Leak Persisting Since 2004
Source: Editor: Date: 2013-6-14
The organisation Skytruth has discovered a persistent leak in the Gulf of Mexico. It was discovered during the BP spill in 2010 and appeared not to be related to the Macondo incident. The well, named after the registration number 23051, was hit by a mudslide caused by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, and abandoned; replugging took place. In 2010, a rig appeared until June 2011. No rig has been seen since then but the leak still seems to be continuing.
Overflights by the Gulf Monitoring Consortium and On Wings of Care and radar imagery show a slick which may reach to 20 miles from the source, about 12 miles offshore.
