Superstorm Sandy has led to an oil slick in the waters of New York. The wind ruptured two tanks belonging to Motiva Enterprises, a joint venture between Shell and Saudi Refining, resulting in an oil spill in the waters of the USA's largest city.
According to environmental officials in New Jersey, about 1,000,000 litres of diesel spilled. The U.S. Coast Guard is currently working to clean up the oil. The tanks are situated at a refinery which is partially owned by Shellin Sewaren in the state of New Jersey. The oil had drained into the adjacent Woodbridge Creek.
A spokesman from the Coast Guard said that some of the oil could be collected in a second tank. The remaining oil drifted into the Arthur Kill, a strait that separates New Jersey from the New York City District Staten Island.(SpillInternational, Edited by Topco)
